A Compassionate Supervisor Helps An Employee Address His Hazardous And Abusive Drinking After A Broken Relationship

Barry got suspended from high school when he was sixteen years old and eventually got a job at a local tire manufacturer. For the last three-and-a-half years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working and diligent person who infrequently takes off from work because of illness.

Around six months ago he began going out with a young woman named Carol. They appeared to get along real well immediately and gave people the impression that they had a lot of fun together.

When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This situation totally changed when Barry and Carol began seeing one another on a fairly usual basis. In truth, their relationship was going fine until Carol called Barry one night about 3:30 AM and said that she had to stop dating him and that she couldn't explain the reason at that moment.

The next morning before he went to work, Barry drove to Carol's condo and found out that she had already moved out. Barry took this really hard. In reality, he was dismayed because they appeared to be getting along so well.

So what did Barry do about Carol's departure? Rather than working through his pain, he began getting drunk just about every night. It didn't take long for his pals at work and for his boss to see that Barry was coming to work late at least three times every week and that he frequently called off sick. Not only this but some of his co-workers made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and said that Barry routinely came to work with a strong odor of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.

Barry's supervisor heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Monday morning he invited Barry into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed a great change in his behavior, attendance, sick time, and in his work performance.

"Barry I am not an authority about alcohol facts and I'm not particularly well-educated about alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen many of my friends and relatives experience some really damaging issues because of their abusive and excessive drinking. My suggestion is that you take time and learn more facts about alcohol and what alcoholism and alcohol abuse can do to an individual."

"Why is this important? When people involve themselves in abusive and hazardous drinking, their drinking difficulties not only adversely affect the problem drinker, but they also adversely impact his or her neighbors, co-workers, family, friends, and relatives. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your excessive and hazardous drinking from our employee's assistance program."

Barry respected his manager a lot and as a consequence followed through with his recommendation the very next day when he called and made an appointment with a healthcare practitioner in the company's employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't necessarily feel any better or less depressed about the sadness he still feels for Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his boss and his fellow employees wanted what's best for him and cared about him. This gave Barry some emotional relief for the first time in several weeks and he actually experienced some hope that he would get his life back on track.
