A Physical Education And Health Teacher Teaches Her Students About The Importance Of Alcohol Dependency Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most financially challenged co-ed high school in the region. Although she had been teaching for only four years, she had already acquired a reputation as a teacher with teaching techniques that encouraged and stimulated her students to learn and to think.
For example, one Thursday morning at 9:30 she addressed her pupils and announced the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a more broad-based point of view and we are also going to learn about some of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific point of view."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will unquestionably demonstrate that someone with a drinking problem is a person who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that an individual manifests, the stronger the probability that she or he is an alcohol dependent person."
Miss Jackson then informed the class members that each person would be accountable for investigating three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her findings to the rest of the class by way of a twenty minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to study the list and rank the top nine alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After roughly ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and told her pupils that after she assesses the results, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked her pupils to look over the data on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within 20 or 30 seconds, virtually everyone in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was evident that the students had some concerns, questions, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For instance, virtually every person in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, specifically, "Do you feel exceedingly sick when you quit drinking?"
Miss Jackson then explained to the students in her class why this answer was the most precise indicator of alcoholism. She underscored the fact that the most important difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.
In effect this means that when a person who is alcohol dependent abruptly stops drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is alcohol dependent, the students started to appreciate the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the enthusiasm manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson realized that she had inspired and motivated the pupils in her class to stop and think about a significant health issue and social problem that exists in our society.
